Iran women stun hosts Japan in Asian Games 3x3 basketball opener
Iran’s national women’s 3x3 basketball team made an impressive start to their campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya on Monday, securing back-to-back victories over Uzbekistan and tournament hosts Japan.
Tehran - BORNA - In their opening fixture on the second day of the Games, the Iranian squad delivered a commanding performance to sweep past Uzbekistan 19-5.
The team followed up with a hard-fought 18-16 victory against Japan, mathematically sealing their qualification for the second round of the tournament with one group match to spare.
Iran will play their third and final preliminary group-stage fixture against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
Headed by coach Sahar Najafi, the Iranian roster at the Nagoya Games features Mahla Abedi, Farnaz Khodamoradi, Shamim Nouri, and Mahsa Karani.
