Iranian, Armenian FMs discuss bilateral ties, Caucasus peace in Tehran
Tehran - BORNA - During the meeting, the two top diplomats reviewed the growing trajectory of bilateral cooperation across various fields of mutual interest, reaffirming the determination of the leadership in both Tehran and Yerevan to deepen and expand relations.
Highlighting the deep-rooted historical bonds between the two nations, Araghchi underscored the Islamic Republic’s policy of fostering relations with neighboring countries, particularly in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
He emphasized that strengthening regional interactions serves as a guarantee for sustainable peace and security, while fostering economic growth and prosperity for the nations of the region.
For his part, Mirzoyan welcomed his visit to Tehran and underscored the strategic nature of Armenia-Iran relations, highlighting Yerevan’s dedication to expanding multifaceted ties.
The Armenian foreign minister expressed hope that the upcoming signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the two nations would further consolidate and elevate bilateral relations.
The two ministers also explored avenues to bolster cooperation in the economic, political, commercial, transit, and energy sectors, while exchanging views on broader developments in the South Caucasus and West Asia.
Touching upon the South Caucasus peace process, Araghchi welcomed the positive momentum in interactions between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. He reiterated Tehran’s readiness to facilitate lasting peace and enhance regional connectivity through dialogue and multilateral platforms, notably the "3+3" regional consultation mechanism.
Araghchi cautioned against the involvement of external actors, stating that enduring stability in the Caucasus hinges on resolving regional issues through regional mechanisms while preventing interference by extra-regional forces.
The Iranian foreign minister also briefed his counterpart on developments in West Asia, specifically regarding the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Pointing to the destabilizing effects of military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime as the primary cause of maritime insecurity in the strategic waterway, Araghchi affirmed that Iran will decisively defend its national security while continuing to employ diplomatic tools to avert further escalation.
The two sides concluded the meeting by discussing enhanced coordination within the United Nations and other multilateral frameworks.
