Grossi: We Have Been Striving to Continue Inspections in Iran
Tehran - BORNA - "Rafael Grossi," the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), addressed the political challenges facing the Agency and identified Iran's nuclear program as one of the main files during an exclusive interview with an Algerian channel that aired on Wednesday evening.
Grossi, who spoke to AL24News, commented on the challenges facing the IAEA, stating: The challenges relate more to political issues than to technical ones. That is, in parts of the world or in countries where nuclear activities have raised questions and concerns, whether those concerns are justified or not, this is the area we are discussing. Countries where there are crises with a nuclear dimension.
The IAEA Director General continued: First and foremost, there is the issue of Iran's nuclear program, which has always been a subject of questions, doubts, different processes, and periods of positive and negative developments. This year, we witnessed the use of force in that country; within the framework of what is called the "12-day war." At the same time, we are striving to re-establish communication with Iran so that we can continue our inspection work.
He also mentioned: Another example is the war between Russia and Ukraine, where the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with a capacity of 6 gigawatts and six thousand-megawatt reactors, is located. Our role in this case has been, first and foremost, to prevent a nuclear accident, as this power plant is situated in a region involved in combat.
The IAEA Director General had previously stated that despite the possibility of withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) after the 12-day war, Tehran did not choose the path of cutting ties with the world, and today, the Agency is also attempting to develop its relationship with Tehran.
