China Opposes Any Foreign Intervention Against Venezuela Amid U.S. Military Buildup
Tehran - BORNA - Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated at a press conference in Beijing: "China opposes any action that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter or infringes upon the sovereignty and security of other countries."
He particularly stressed Beijing's firm stance against external interference in Caracas: "Beijing, at the same time, opposes foreign forces interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs under any pretext. We urge all parties to keep the Latin American and Caribbean region a peaceful zone and not allow the situation to escalate further."
The Chinese official's comments come amid reports of the United States expanding military operations in Latin American and Caribbean waters, ostensibly to counter drug trafficking. Since September, the U.S. Navy has reportedly deployed Marines, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, and drones to the region, fueling speculation that Washington intends to launch an attack against Venezuela.
Reports indicate that the U.S. military has carried out 21 attacks against boats accused of drug trafficking since September, resulting in the deaths of at least 83 individuals whom the U.S. government has labeled "drug-trafficking terrorists."
Adding to the tensions and threats against Venezuela, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the airspace over and around Venezuela is considered "fully closed."
