Putin Praises Iran's 'Mosquito Fleet,' Calls for Russian Naval Adaptation
Tehran - BORNA - Addressing naval commanders and officers, Putin pointed to recent military developments in West Asia, highlighting Tehran's asymmetric strategy.
"Look at what is happening in the Middle East conflict zone; Iran's so-called 'mosquito fleet' is operating with high efficiency," Putin noted.
The Russian president highlighted the long-standing history of "mosquito fleet" tactics in naval warfare, emphasizing that Russia must adapt its fleet to meet operational demands in various maritime theaters.
The remarks follow international media coverage—including a report by the Financial Times—detailing the deployment of hundreds of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast attack craft across the Strait of Hormuz. According to those reports, Tehran maintains hundreds of small speedboats distributed across bays, coastal caves, and tunnels in southern Iran. The vessels, often equipped with light weapons or short-range missiles, operate in swarms to deter larger, slower warships and commercial vessels.
