Iran’s Greco-Roman Team Crowned the Most Successful Champion in History
Tehran - BORNA - At the 2025 World Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia, Team Iran claimed four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, finishing with a total of 180 points—a remarkable 91-point lead over runner-up Azerbaijan. This triumph marked Iran’s second-ever world title in Greco-Roman wrestling and the first in 11 years.
Beyond the title itself, the victory was historic for its unprecedented efficiency. Under head coach Hassan Rangraz, the Iranian team earned 180 out of a possible 250 points—72% of the maximum score—setting a new all-time record. This achievement surpasses Russia’s legendary 2018 performance, when they scored 178 points (71.2%), as well as Russia’s 2010 result of 65.7% when the competition was held across seven weight categories.
Iran’s 2025 success also highlights the sharp contrast with its last championship in 2014, when the team scored 42 out of 80 possible points (52.5%). The 2025 squad thus improved by nearly 20 percentage points, a leap that cements this year’s triumph as the most dominant in the sport’s global history.
What makes the achievement even more striking is the youth of the team: with an average age of just 22.4 years, Iran fielded the youngest lineup of the tournament—yet managed to break an 11-year drought and rewrite the record books. This generational breakthrough not only restored Iran’s supremacy but also signals a promising new era for Greco-Roman wrestling in the country.
