Gharibabadi: Europe Must Use 30-Day Window to Correct Its Mistake
Tehran - BORNA - Speaking on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, where he accompanied the Iranian delegation, Gharibabadi noted the significance of cooperation with SCO member states that are also members of the UN Security Council.
“China and Russia, as permanent members, and Pakistan, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, share positions with us. All three oppose the snapback mechanism and the reimposition of annulled UN sanctions. This provides Iran with an opportunity to coordinate with them on this issue,” he said.
Gharibabadi added that the SCO leaders’ final communiqué includes several points raised by Iran, which were approved. “One clause explicitly condemns the aggression of the Zionist regime and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran, including attacks on nuclear facilities, which they recognized as a violation of international law. This is highly significant because the SCO leaders condemned these aggressions by name, underlining the seriousness of the matter.”
He further explained that another clause focuses on UN Security Council Resolution 2231, with members stressing that it must be implemented fully and not selectively. “This means European countries cannot ignore their obligations while choosing to enforce only the snapback provision. The inclusion of this in the communiqué is extremely important,” he emphasized.
Addressing the recent move by the E3 to trigger the snapback mechanism, Gharibabadi said: “The notification sent to activate the snapback process is completely illegal and lacks any legal basis. Unfortunately, international organizations often operate within political frameworks, and the Europeans took this step. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has already issued a statement outlining the Islamic Republic’s position on the matter.”
He noted that Europeans themselves have said the process takes 20 to 30 days. “We have declared that we hope Europe uses this timeframe to correct the mistake they have made. They know well that if they move toward restoring sanctions, Iran will adopt a proportional and decisive response,” he warned.
“This window of time is not only for Iran, but also for Europe itself to correct its error,” Gharibabadi concluded.
