Iranian, European diplomats to meet in New York amid snapback dispute
Tehran - BORNA - A French diplomatic source confirmed that Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will meet with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Reports suggest IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi may also attend the meeting.
The talks come at a critical juncture, as European powers press for the reimposition of UN sanctions while Tehran insists on a diplomatic resolution. Araghchi had met with Grossi a day earlier and signaled Iran’s readiness for engagement.
Speaking upon arrival in New York on Monday, Araghchi declared, “This is the moment for the other side to decide whether they choose cooperation or confrontation. The Islamic Republic has been tested many times; they know we do not respond to the language of pressure and threats, but to the language of respect and dignity. If a solution exists, it can only be a diplomatic one.”
He expressed hope that the current round of consultations could lead to an agreement, while warning that Iran would take necessary measures if diplomacy fails. “This is the right moment for final consultations on the snapback issue,” he said, emphasizing that Tehran’s choice remains dialogue and peaceful resolution.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s present situation is the direct result of the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA. “Otherwise, Iran has consistently proven its commitment to diplomacy. We are still ready for a diplomatic solution—one that safeguards the interests of the Iranian people and addresses our security concerns,” he added.
Concluding, the foreign minister stressed that Iran will use every remaining day in New York to pursue consultations. “If a solution is reached, it will serve the region, non-proliferation, and international law. If not, the Iranian people’s path is clear: we will continue forward,” he said.
