Iran, Rosatom Sign MoU on Construction of Small Modular Reactors
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Iran.

Tehran - BORNA - The agreement was signed during a meeting between Mohammad Eslami, Vice President of Iran and head of the AEOI, and Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, during Eslami’s visit to Russia.

The MoU aims to expand bilateral cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, with a focus on advancing sustainable development, enhancing energy security, and promoting technological progress, in line with national laws and international obligations of both countries.

As part of the implementation process, contracts will be drawn up and signed between relevant organizations from the two sides for the design and construction of power plants based on small modular reactor technology.

Iranian officials stressed that SMR projects would play a significant role in advancing the country’s technical expertise, nuclear know-how, and related industries, particularly in the production of equipment and components for power generation. In addition, access to SMR technology is expected to provide new capacity for supplying energy to large industries and help balance Iran’s electricity grid.

The development of nuclear power plants using SMRs has become a central topic in the global nuclear energy sector, with many countries pursuing plans to acquire and deploy this technology as part of their future energy strategies.
