Russia says studying building small nuclear plants in Iran
A Russian representative in Iran has said his country is studying building small nuclear plants in Iran to generate electricity in remote areas.

Tehran - BORNA - Alexander Efimov, Russia’s temporary trade representative to Iran, said in an interview on Monday that the development of small nuclear power plants with Russian participation is in demand in remote regions and industrial clusters of Iran that do not need large power plants.

“The construction of small nuclear power plants is being considered in Iran. This is a new and popular solution, especially for remote regions and industrial clusters that do not need large power plants but need a reliable and environmentally friendly source of electricity,” Efimov told RIA Novosti news agency.

According to the Ria Novosti report, Iran has an operating nuclear power plant in Bushehr, the next phase of which is being built with Russian assistance. The first unit of the plant, completed with Russian participation, was connected to Iran’s national electricity grid in September 2011.

Construction of the second phase of the plant, which will include two more units, is underway. Iran and Russia signed an agreement in late September 2025 to build four power units worth $25 billion in Hormozgan province in southern Iran for the new Hormoz nuclear power plant.

Russia and Iran also signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the construction of small nuclear power plants in Iran.
