Lavrov Urges U.S. to Choose Dialogue Over Sanctions and Threats
Tehran - BORNA - The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement by Sergey Lavrov on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, criticizing the U.S. government's unilateralist approach toward countries that challenge its policies.
"I advise the United States, in any case where it dislikes a particular government, to first enter into dialogue with that government," Lavrov wrote. He emphasized that "no country has ever rejected dialogue with the United States; it is the United States that first agrees and then withdraws."
These remarks come in the wake of a historical pattern of U.S. withdrawals from international commitments. Under the Trump administration, Washington famously exited the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and reimposed sweeping sanctions. Additionally, the U.S. has withdrawn from various international agreements and organizations in the past, including the Paris Agreement, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the UN Human Rights Council.
By pointing to this track record, Lavrov sought to portray the United States as an "unreliable" actor on the international stage. The Russian top diplomat has repeatedly accused Washington of undermining the rules-based international order through its persistent use of ultimatums and unilateral withdrawal from established treaties.
