Iran seeks justice for Mazar-i-Sharif consulate attack
Tehran - BORNA - In a statement, the ministry honored the memory of eight Iranian diplomats and a journalist martyred on August 8, 1998, when armed terrorists stormed into Iran’s Consulate General in Mazar-i-Sharif after they took control of the city.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran keeps emphasizing the need to clarify the dimensions of the terrorist crime, identify its perpetrators and masterminds, and take tangible measures to ensure justice is served,” it said, noting that Tehran “is seriously pursuing the case," it said.
Iran has held the Taliban accountable for the tragic incident that violated all diplomatic principles, international law, and humanitarian and moral obligations. The group, however, has denied responsibility and blamed it on what it calls renegade militants.
"Undoubtedly, this terrorist attack is considered one of the most horrific examples of gross violations of international law in the realm of diplomatic and consular relations,” the ministry added.
The deadly attack “was met with strong international condemnation, including under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267."
