Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the country's armed forces will not hesitate to exercise their inherent right to legitimate defense and will respond decisively to any military aggression against them.

Tehran - BORNA - The ministry said the US "terrorist army" struck parts of Lark Island on the night of Sunday, Aug. 30, in what it called a renewed violation of Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, killing and wounding several defenders and causing damage to public and private property.

In response, and in accordance with its inherent right to legitimate defense, Iran's armed forces struck US military bases in Jordan, which the ministry said were the origin and support base for the US military aggression against Iran.

The ministry strongly condemned the attack on Lark as a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, and said it reminds the UN Security Council and the secretary-general of their responsibility to safeguard international peace and security and to hold the aggressor accountable.

The ministry also said it wants to remind the secretary-general, the Security Council president and all governments that have expressed concern over continued insecurity in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz that the sole cause of that insecurity has been the illegal and aggressive actions of the United States and Israel, which began with the attack on Iran on Feb. 28 and have continued over the past six months in various forms, including a naval blockade and other provocative and interventionist measures.

The ministry reiterated that Iran's armed forces will not hesitate to exercise their inherent right to legitimate defense and will respond decisively to any military aggression. It said full responsibility for the consequences of any new US aggressive actions and the continuation of the naval blockade and economic war against Iran rests with the US government and any party that participates or assists in the preparation or execution of these unlawful US actions.
