Russia: Western Approach to Iran's Nuclear Program is Destructive
Tehran - BORNA - The Delegation of the Russian Federation at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting announced that the latest report by the Director General concerning the "NPT Safeguards Agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran" contains no request for immediate action or the issuance of a resolution.
The Russian statement reads: "We found nothing in the Director General's report that could be interpreted as a request for new guidelines or emergency measures, including the adoption of a resolution. Such a request was also not raised by the Director General."
The Delegation added: "On the contrary, the report shows that the Agency and Iran, even under the current very difficult circumstances, have been able to find common ground for the continued implementation of safeguards. During the reporting period, Tehran allowed Agency inspectors access to sites that were not affected by the illegal and unwarranted US and Israeli attacks in June. The report also emphasizes that the difficult conditions following these attacks necessitated constructive cooperation between Iran and the Agency for the implementation of safeguards obligations, and Iran has initiated the cooperation process."
Criticism of Western Resolution
The Russian Representation, referring to the countries that presented the recent anti-Iran resolution to the Board of Governors, including Britain, Germany, the United States, and France, stated: "For these four countries, the facts in the report do not matter; they pursue their destructive goals against Iran within the framework of the Board of Governors."
The statement also identified a "serious shortcoming" in Grossi's report as the lack of explicit condemnation of the US and Israeli attacks against the Agency's safeguarded nuclear facilities, adding: "The Agency, both members and the Secretariat, has failed to provide an appropriate response to these illegal actions over the past five months. The deliberate destruction of peaceful nuclear facilities seems to be becoming normalized, while the perpetrators of the attacks and their accomplices continue to escalate tensions, taking advantage of complete impunity."
Russia's Stance
The Russian Representation concluded by reiterating its "strong condemnation" of the US and Israeli attacks against Iran's IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities, describing these actions as "irresponsible and aggressive" and a violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the Agency's Statute.
Russia warned that the serious consequences of these attacks for the Agency's safeguards system and the NPT have not yet been evaluated.
