ElBaradei: Larijani Was a Philosopher and a Pragmatic Politician
Former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, has described the late Ali Larijani, former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, as both a philosopher and a pragmatic politician.

Tehran - BORNA - In a recent interview, ElBaradei reflected on his past negotiations with Larijani and his personality, noting that despite differing viewpoints, Larijani demonstrated a strong pragmatic approach.

ElBaradei said in an interview with the “David Hearst” podcast: “We came from different perspectives, but Ali Larijani was a pragmatic politician. Many people may not know this, but he authored four books on the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Larijani was also a philosopher. Yes, he was also an ideologue, but these are exactly the kinds of people you sit down with at the negotiating table and ask what they want so that problems can be resolved.”

He further added: “He was a firm figure, but negotiating with him was always constructive. As I said, Larijani was a pragmatist with a clear understanding of what could be achieved in any negotiation. He knew what he could gain in return for specific actions. In my view, he was highly capable. He had a deep understanding of the issues and knew well what outcomes he was seeking from any negotiation. We have lost a valuable interlocutor.”

Ali Larijani, along with his son, one of his deputies, and several associates, was killed in an attack by U.S. and Israeli fighter jets targeting his workplace.
