Medvedev: Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s ‘Nuclear Weapon’
A senior Russian official has characterized the Strait of Hormuz as Iran’s strategic equivalent to a nuclear weapon, highlighting Tehran's immense leverage over global energy corridors.

Tehran - BORNA - Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, reacted to the establishment of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States in a post on his X account.

"It is unclear how the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran will unfold, but one thing is certain: Iran has already tested its nuclear weapons. It is called the Strait of Hormuz," Medvedev wrote.

Medvedev, who has previously served as both President and Prime Minister of Russia, emphasized the strategic significance of the waterway, adding that its "potential is inexhaustible."

The Russian official's remarks follow a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding the temporary cessation of hostilities. Araghchi noted that the ceasefire was established to facilitate consultations for ending the conflict, following mediation by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

On behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Araghchi declared that if attacks against the Islamic Republic cease, Iranian Armed Forces will halt their defensive strikes. Furthermore, he announced that for a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible, provided there is coordination with Iranian forces and adherence to existing technical constraints.

The comparison made by Medvedev underscores the international perception of Iran’s maritime authority in the region as a "strategic deterrent" capable of influencing global markets and security dynamics far beyond the immediate conflict zone.
