Iran-US Quadrilateral Talks Paused for Internal Consultations
Tehran - BORNA - The quadrilateral negotiations between Iran and the US commenced on Sunday afternoon in Switzerland. However, simultaneous harsh and insulting remarks by the US President regarding Iran and its positions—particularly concerning the closure of the Strait of Hormuz since Saturday in response to the Israeli regime's attacks on Lebanon—threaten to overshadow the negotiation table once again.
Donald Trump threatened the Iranian negotiating delegation in Switzerland with remarks that stood in stark contradiction to the statements made by his vice president, JD Vance, just before the start of the talks at the Bürgenstock Hotel.
In an interview with Fox News, the US President violated Clause 1 of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MoU)—which strictly binds both sides to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other—by using aggressive and offensive language regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Threatening the Iranian representatives present at the talks, Trump stated: "If Iran closes the Strait, you won't have a country anymore, and you won't even return to your damn country!"
The negotiating delegations of Iran and the US had begun their closed-door talks at 5:00 PM Tehran time.
It is worth noting that these negotiations are being conducted with the primary objective of demanding the fulfillment of the opposing side's commitments, with the cessation of the war in Lebanon serving as the precondition for entering the talks. Other critical issues, including mitigating the impact of sanctions, removing restrictions related to the Strait of Hormuz, and implementing other obligations stipulated in the memorandum of understanding, are also being pursued.
