Kremlin: No date set for next Trump–Putin call
Tehran - BORNA - According to RIA Novosti, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “We still do not know the precise date of the next contact between Presidents Putin and Trump.” He added that Moscow has received reports suggesting Trump may personally address Russia’s initiative regarding the treaty.
Peskov stressed that Russia’s willingness to continue abiding by New START limitations one year after its scheduled expiration in February 2026 hinges entirely on reciprocal action by Washington. “There is no ambiguity here; the text is absolutely clear. For Russia to continue implementing quantitative limits under this treaty, a reciprocal U.S. position is essential,” he said. He also ruled out the possibility of negotiating a new treaty before the current one expires, warning that the absence of such agreements would carry serious risks.
Putin announced Monday that Moscow is ready to maintain restrictions under New START for another year, provided the United States also upholds its commitments. Peskov clarified that the treaty has been raised “in general terms” during past U.S.–Russia contacts, noting that time is running out. “We are indeed on the verge of a situation where no bilateral instrument regulating strategic stability may remain,” he warned.
Peskov further noted that Russia has not conveyed new proposals to Washington on the treaty’s fate but confirmed that Moscow is aware of reports indicating Trump could personally engage on the issue.
Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Peskov said hostile actions by Kyiv continue, but Russian forces are effectively countering all threats. He dismissed accusations against Russian troops as lacking credible evidence and reiterated that Russian military flights are conducted strictly within international law.
Responding to allegations of Russian involvement in a drone incident at Copenhagen airport, Peskov said such unfounded claims lose weight over time. “We constantly hear baseless accusations. A serious and responsible party should refrain from repeating such statements,” he remarked.
He also announced that Putin will meet with Leonid Pasechnik, head of the Luhansk region, stressing the president’s focus on the development of Russia’s “new territories.” Meanwhile, international cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy will feature prominently at the upcoming “World Atomic Week” forum, hosted by Moscow from September 25 to 30, marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry.
