Araghchi holds talks with senior European diplomats in New York
Tehran - ISNA - The talks brought together Araghchi, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and the EU’s top diplomat. Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi also took part in the meeting.
The discussions centered on Iran’s nuclear file and the European trio’s push for the activation of the snapback mechanism at the UN Security Council.
Upon his arrival in New York on Monday, Araghchi had already signaled the stakes of the consultations, declaring, “This is the moment for the other side to decide whether they choose cooperation or confrontation. The Islamic Republic has been tested many times; they know we do not respond to the language of pressure and threats, but to the language of respect and dignity. If a solution exists, it can only be a diplomatic one.”
The foreign minister expressed hope that intensive consultations this week could lead to a breakthrough, while making clear that Iran would take necessary measures if diplomacy is blocked. “The meeting with European parties is a suitable moment for final consultations regarding the snapback developments,” he said.
Reaffirming Iran’s consistent stance, Araghchi stressed that Tehran’s choice remains diplomacy and peaceful solutions. He added, “The current situation is the result of America’s withdrawal from the JCPOA. Iran has proven its commitment to diplomacy. We are still ready for a diplomatic solution—one that secures the interests of the Iranian people, addresses our security concerns, and ultimately leads to a fair outcome.”
Concluding, Araghchi noted, “I am here to use the remaining days for diplomatic consultations. If a solution is found, it will serve the region, non-proliferation, and international law. If not, the path of the Iranian people is clear: we will continue forward. Still, we believe diplomacy remains the only viable way, and we are ready for it.”
