Japan urges continued diplomacy with Iran
Tehran - BORNA - Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya issued a statement in response to the move by the European troika and the United States to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran through the activation of the snapback mechanism.
“Japan has consistently emphasized the importance of resolving this issue through dialogue. From the standpoint that Iran should never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, it is regrettable that the parties involved have failed to reach an agreement,” the statement read.
In reaction, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the European E3’s alignment with Washington in reimposing terminated UN Security Council resolutions against Iran as “unjustifiable and illegal.”
He pointed to a letter sent by Iran’s Foreign Minister to his counterparts highlighting the illegality of the U.S. and European move, stressing: “The misuse of the JCPOA dispute resolution mechanism by the three European countries should not in any way affect the legal reality that Resolution 2231 must expire on October 18, 2025, as stipulated in the text. Any attempt to revive terminated sanctions must therefore be considered null and void.”
UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, is set to expire on October 18 (26 Mehr). However, the three European parties to the deal — the UK, France, and Germany — launched the snapback process on August 28, citing claims of Iran’s non-compliance with its nuclear commitments, and gave a 30-day deadline for the reimposition of sanctions.
According to Mainichi News, Japan’s foreign minister added: “The Iranian nuclear issue is at a critical juncture. Japan’s position — stressing the need to resolve the issue through dialogue — remains unchanged, and such dialogue must not lose momentum.”
Iranian officials have previously emphasized that this move will not go unanswered.
