Tehran – BORNA: The Estemaran date palm, a gem of Khuzestan, stands as a symbol of southern Iran’s agricultural heritage. Known also as “Sayer,” this premium variety of date is more than a fruit — it is a reflection of Khuzestan’s cultural and ecological identity. In this photo report, we witness the intense yet graceful process of harvesting unripe kharak (the semi-ripe stage before full ripening) in the Eastern Haffar region of Khorramshahr, with temperatures soaring above 50°C.

The Estemaran date is primarily cultivated in the fertile palm groves of Shadegan, Khorramshahr, and Abadan. These regions, characterized by hot and humid summers and mild winters, provide ideal conditions for the growth of this distinctive cultivar.

Recognized for its deep brown oval-shaped appearance, the Estemaran date has a relatively thick skin that slightly clings to its tender flesh. What truly sets it apart, however, is its balanced sweetness — rich but never overpowering — making it a favorite among both domestic and international consumers.

Beneath its smooth texture lies a nutritional powerhouse. Estemaran dates are rich in dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. Regular consumption supports digestion, helps regulate blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, and can even contribute to heart health. Its natural sugars also make it a sustainable energy source, especially for athletes and physically active individuals.

This series of images captures the resilience and tradition of local farmers as they work under extreme heat to harvest kharak, the early-stage fruit that will later mature into the Estemaran dates cherished around the world.
