Araghchi Reports “Serious” Progress in Indirect U.S. Negotiations
Tehran - BORNA - “Today we held the second round of negotiations with the American delegation indirectly at the Omani Embassy in Geneva,” Araghchi said following the talks. He noted that consultations had begun a day earlier and that International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi traveled to Geneva, where “good technical discussions” were held. Grossi also met with the U.S. delegation, he added.
“In this round, compared to the previous one, fully serious discussions were raised and there was a more constructive atmosphere,” the Iranian foreign minister stated.
Araghchi said various ideas were presented and “seriously discussed,” adding that the two sides reached a general understanding on “a set of guiding principles” that will form the basis for moving forward and entering the drafting stage of a potential agreement.
“This does not mean that we can reach an agreement quickly, but at least the path has begun,” he said. He expressed hope that progress could be achieved as soon as possible, stressing that Iran is prepared to devote sufficient time to the process, while noting that drafting the text of a possible agreement would be “more difficult and more detailed.”
Describing the latest round as marking “good progress” compared to the previous meeting, Araghchi said, “We now have a clearer path ahead, which in my view is positive.”
No specific timeline was set, he said, explaining that both sides agreed to work on draft texts for a possible agreement, exchange them, and then determine a date for a third round of negotiations.
“It is not a roadmap in that sense, but we now have a clearer picture of what needs to be done and what steps must be taken along the way,” Araghchi said, adding that while both sides still maintain positions requiring further convergence, “at least now we have a set of guiding principles and a clearer path along which to move.”
