The Foreign Ministers of Iraq and Oman held a telephone conversation to discuss the latest regional developments, emphasizing the critical need for the success of upcoming negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Tehran - BORNA - According to a statement by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received a call from his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

Oman’s Mediation and the Geneva Summit

During the consultation, the Omani Foreign Minister briefed Fuad Hussein on the details of the upcoming meeting between representatives of the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, scheduled to take place in Geneva under Omani mediation.

The two sides reviewed the key pillars of the forthcoming talks, stressing that a successful outcome is essential to averting the threat of war and bolstering regional security and stability.

Maritime Border Dispute with Kuwait

The conversation also addressed a recent statement by the Kuwaiti government regarding the registration of Iraq’s maritime map with the United Nations.

Minister Fuad Hussein provided historical context, noting that in 2014, Kuwait registered its maritime maps and baselines with the UN without consulting Baghdad. He clarified that Iraq’s recent registration of its own map is a sovereign move to define its maritime boundaries.

Both ministers emphasized the importance of negotiations based on clear legal principles. They called for the determination of Iraq’s maritime baselines according to accepted international standards, similar to the process undertaken by Kuwait.

Fuad Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to international law, UN resolutions, and relevant bilateral agreements. He underscored that Baghdad’s core policy remains the resolution of disputes through dialogue, respect for national sovereignty, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.
