Gharibabadi: Cycle of Negotiations, War, and Ceasefire Must Not Be Repeated
Tehran - BORNA - Kazem Gharibabadi made these remarks during a meeting on Thursday with Jean Arnault, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Middle East. Gharibabadi characterized the military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran as a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter. He criticized the United Nations for its failure to condemn the aggression, halt the conflict, or hold the perpetrators accountable. He noted that the U.S. and Israel targeted tens of thousands of civilian sites, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of thousands of innocent people. He stated that the destruction of residential areas, hospitals, schools, and cultural infrastructure constitutes clear examples of crimes against humanity and war crimes, adding that the perpetrators' open pride in such acts, including the killing of children, represents a peak of inhumanity.
The Deputy Foreign Minister also addressed the role of certain regional states, criticizing countries on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf for allowing the U.S. to use military bases on their territory for the aggression. He asserted that these nations share international responsibility for the strikes, while clarifying that Iran’s responses were purely defensive and not directed at these countries. He remarked that foreign presence has proven to be a source of instability and a threat to regional security. Highlighting the resilience of the Iranian people during this "imposed war," Gharibabadi reiterated that Iran will not consider temporary fixes. He stated that only options involving a sustainable termination of the war, accountability for the aggressors, and reparations for damages would be considered.
Jean Arnault, the UN Special Envoy, stated during the meeting that the ultimate goal of the United Nations is to achieve a stable and comprehensive settlement that addresses all aspects of the crisis. He defined his primary task as addressing the root causes that led to the current situation.
