Envoy: Islamabad Hosting Mechanism to End ‘Illegal War’ Against Iran
Tehran - BORNA - Ambassador Amiri Moghaddam shared his remarks on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, as high-level delegations from Tehran and Washington convened for their first diplomatic encounter following a 40-day conflict.
"Today, Islamabad is hosting a good mechanism to help end the illegal war against Iran—a war that is not only a blatant crime against the Iranian nation and civilization but has also endangered regional and global security," the envoy wrote. He added a note of caution regarding the outcome: "It remains to be seen whether the U.S. will respect the host's mediating efforts or...?"
Diplomatic Momentum in Islamabad
The negotiations are taking place under a two-week ceasefire agreement facilitated by Pakistan. The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf—who holds a mandate from the Supreme National Security Council and the country’s leadership—arrived in Islamabad early Saturday.
Earlier today, Speaker Ghalibaf, accompanied by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, held a preliminary meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House to discuss the framework of the talks.
The presence of the Iranian team, which includes top military, economic, and legal experts, underscores Tehran's "integrated diplomacy" approach. Observers are closely watching the Serena Hotel, the venue for the talks, to see if the process will transition from indirect mediation to direct dialogue between the Iranian and U.S. representatives.
